The 2024–2025 Great Lakes Yield Enhancement Network (YEN) achieved a milestone in its fifth year, recording the highest winter wheat yield since its inception — over 180 bushels per acre.
The cross-border collaboration among Grain Farmers of Ontario, Michigan State University, the Michigan Wheat Program, the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness, and the University of Guelph showcased the power of shared learning and innovation in agriculture.
This year’s top performers reflected both dedication and data-driven precision. Michigan’s Nick Suwyn topped the list with 182.6 bushels per acre, followed by Ontario’s Wayne Metzger at 170.1, and Michigan’s Ben Wilson with 156.2 bushels per acre.
“Farming today is more technical and knowledge-driven than ever before, and programs like the Great Lakes YEN play a vital role in helping farmers understand the science behind their yields,” said Paul Hoekstra, Vice President of Strategic Development at Grain Farmers of Ontario.
Average yields across all participating farms surpassed 115 bushels per acre, highlighting effective crop management practices. Key contributors included optimal fall seeding conditions in 2024, well-timed moisture, and protective snow cover that ensured high winter survival. While early-seeded Ontario fields showed signs of snow mould, they quickly recovered with strong nitrogen and sulphur management.
Cool spring conditions allowed extended fungicide windows, though stripe rust and isolated common bunt appeared in some regions. Late June heat and windstorms impacted some U.S. fields, yet overall yields remained strong. Ontario’s harvest stood out for its exceptional quality and minimal DON levels, while U.S. harvest quality remained high despite minor sprouting issues.
Reflecting on the milestone, Jody Pollok Newsom, Executive Director of the Michigan Wheat Program, said, “Tracking yield increases and percentage of potential yield achieved helps farmers benchmark progress and make decisions for the future.”
