Avian Influenza Confirmed in Ottawa County Poultry Flock

Avian Influenza Confirmed in Ottawa County Poultry Flock

By Andi Anderson

The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) has confirmed another case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in a commercial poultry flock in Ottawa County, based on testing conducted by the Michigan State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory.

This marks the eighth confirmed case in Ottawa County since 2022 and the third poultry case in 2025.

HPAI is a highly contagious virus that spreads through contact with infected birds, contaminated equipment, and even on clothing or footwear.

State officials continue to remind poultry owners—both commercial and backyard—to remain vigilant and follow strict biosecurity measures to protect domestic flocks.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the current public health risk remains low, but proper handling and cooking of poultry and eggs are always advised to ensure safety.

MDARD urges bird owners to take the following steps to protect their flocks:

  • Prevent contact between domestic and wild birds by keeping birds indoors or in enclosed areas.
  • Wash hands before and after handling birds and between coops.
  • Disinfect boots, tools, and other gear before moving between flocks.
  • Avoid sharing equipment between farms.
  • Use clean, treated water and secure poultry feed to prevent contamination.

Producers should report sick or dying domestic birds immediately by calling MDARD at 800-292-3939 (daytime) or 517-373-0440 (after hours). Those observing unusual deaths among wild birds can report through the Michigan Department of Natural Resources’ Eyes in the Field app or by calling 517-336-5030.

MDARD continues to coordinate with state and federal partners to monitor and control the spread of avian influenza. Flock owners are encouraged to subscribe for updates through MDARD’s Avian Influenza Media Room or visit Michigan.gov/BirdFlu for additional guidance.
