Bipartisan Support Key for Next Farm Bill

Bipartisan Support Key for Next Farm Bill

By Jamie Martin

The future of U.S. agriculture hinges on lawmakers reaching agreement before the most recent farm bill extension expires at the end of September. American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) President Zippy Duvall stressed the need for bipartisanship during a discussion with Brownfield’s Mark Dorenkamp.

Duvall noted that the One Big Beautiful Bill Act had addressed several key concerns for farmers. However, he emphasized that this step must be followed by a fully updated farm bill that reflects today’s agricultural realities.

He acknowledged political tensions, pointing out that many Democrats felt excluded from earlier negotiations. “I think the big problem right now is getting over some of the hurt feelings we have because Democrats felt like they got left out of it,” Duvall said.

The farm bill is a cornerstone of American agriculture, providing essential programs like crop insurance, conservation incentives, and food security initiatives. A lapse or delay in its passage could leave producers and rural communities facing uncertainty during an already challenging season.

For Duvall and the AFBF, the path forward requires compromise and shared commitment. He urged both parties to recognize the farm bill’s broad impact on the nation’s economy, food supply, and rural livelihoods.

Farmers across the country are watching developments closely, hopeful that lawmakers will put aside political differences. A modern, bipartisan farm bill would bring stability and ensure long-term support for America’s agricultural sector.
