The Michigan Vegetable Council (MVC) has recognized two outstanding contributors to Michigan agriculture with the Master Farmer Award. This year’s recipients, Vance Baird and Springdale Farms, were honored at the Great Lakes Fruit, Vegetable, and Farm Market EXPO on December 11.
Dr. William “Vance” Baird, a professor and researcher at Michigan State University (MSU), has played a key role in advancing Michigan’s specialty crop industries. Since joining MSU in 2009, he has strengthened ties between the university and the agricultural sector, ensuring a balance between research and practical applications.
Baird has led initiatives in plant biotechnology, fruit tree genome research, and micropropagation for blueberries and asparagus. His leadership has earned national recognition, including the Outstanding Leadership and Administration Award from the American Society for Horticultural Science.
Springdale Farms, a family-owned operation in Scottville, Michigan, has been a pillar of agricultural resilience since 1874. Originally a fox-breeding and dairy farm, it has evolved into a thriving vegetable and row crop business, cultivating over 1,000 acres of asparagus, zucchini, beans, pumpkins, carrots, and butternut squash.
The farm actively participates in the H-2A guest worker visa program and advocates for sustainable farming practices through industry engagement.
The 2024 Master Farmer Award recognizes these leaders for their dedication to innovation and sustainability in Michigan agriculture, inspiring future generations of farmers and researchers.
