Michigan State University AgBioResearch has entered a new leadership chapter with the appointment of Dr. Chad Cotti, Interim Director of MSU AgBioResearch. The transition comes following the departure of former director George Smith, while the university conducts a search for a permanent leader.
Dr. Cotti brings significant academic and leadership experience to the role. On Aug. 1, 2023, he became chairperson of the Michigan State University Department of Agricultural, Food and Resource Economics (AFRE). His professional background includes expertise in applied microeconomics, health economics, and public policy, along with extensive leadership experience in higher education and research administration.
Three years later, on Aug. 1, 2026, Dr. Cotti assumed the position of interim director of MSU AgBioResearch. In this role, he will oversee the organization’s strategic direction, budget management, and research activities. His responsibilities also include supporting research conducted at numerous on-campus and off-campus facilities located throughout Michigan.
MSU AgBioResearch plays a vital role in advancing agricultural innovation, natural resource management, and scientific discovery. The organization works closely with researchers, producers, industry partners, and communities to address challenges affecting Michigan agriculture and related sectors.
As he begins his leadership role, Dr. Cotti has emphasized that the organization remains fully committed to serving Michigan’s agriculture and natural resources industries. He highlighted the importance of collaboration and partnerships in driving successful research outcomes and creating positive impacts for communities across the state.
Dr. Cotti stated, “I’ve had the opportunity to see the work of AgBioResearch over the three years I’ve been at MSU and come to understand that partnerships are at the center of the organization’s tremendous impact. As interim director, I want to continue building collaborations while being a steward of our existing relationships. I look forward to meeting those who make our work possible and engaging in new discussions for potential partnerships.”
The statement reflects his commitment to maintaining strong relationships with stakeholders while exploring new opportunities for collaboration. These partnerships are considered a key factor in supporting research programs and addressing the evolving needs of agriculture and natural resource industries.
During the leadership transition, MSU AgBioResearch will continue its focus on scientific research, innovation, and outreach. Under Dr. Cotti’s interim leadership, the organization aims to strengthen existing partnerships, encourage new collaborations, and support projects that benefit farmers, communities, and the broader agricultural sector.
As the search for a permanent director continues, MSU AgBioResearch remains dedicated to its mission of advancing knowledge and delivering research-based solutions that contribute to the long-term success of Michigan agriculture and natural resource management.
