Dairy genetics leader receives Pioneer Award

By Andi Anderson

CentralStar Cooperative has proudly announced Charlie Will from Marysville, Ohio, as the recipient of their esteemed 2024 Pioneer Award. This recognition, originating in 1977, is bestowed upon individuals who have demonstrated exceptional dedication and leadership, significantly enhancing the cooperative's success and that of its members.

CentralStar Cooperative, representing member-stock owners across Wisconsin, Michigan, and Indiana, highlighted Will's pivotal role in the dairy industry during an illustrious career spanning over four decades.

Paul Trierweiler, President of the CentralStar Board of Directors, commended Will for his passion and leadership which have notably advanced the genetics available to dairy producers globally. "His unwavering commitment has left a permanent mark on our cooperation and the dairy industry," stated Trierweiler.

Beginning his career with cold calls in northeastern Wisconsin as a sales representative for what was then Michigan Animal Breeders Cooperative, now part of CentralStar, Will's persistence gradually established a robust customer base, setting the stage for the cooperative's growth. His career took a significant turn in 1978 when he joined Select Sires, Inc. as an assistant sire analyst before eventually becoming the Holstein sire program manager.

Under Will's guidance, he contributed to the development of several iconic dairy bulls like 7HO980 MARK and 7HO1897 BLACKSTAR, which have set new standards in the industry. Reflecting on his achievements, Will expressed pride in the impact these bulls have had on the dairy industry, enhancing dairy management and economic viability for producers across the globe.

CentralStar Cooperative continues to fulfill its mission of enhancing producer profitability through integrated services that contribute to farm prosperity. These include genetics from Accelerated Genetics, GenerVations, and Select Sires, alongside comprehensive artificial-insemination technician services, genetic consulting, and more.

The cooperative's administrative and warehouse facilities are based in Lansing, Michigan, and Waupun, Wisconsin, serving a broad area that includes dairy and beef producers in Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana, and beyond.
