Dawn Drake, widely known as "Mama D" in Michigan’s agriculture industry, will receive the MSU College of Agriculture and Natural Resources Honorary Alumni Award on March 7. This prestigious award recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to agriculture at state, national, or international levels.
Drake has dedicated over 45 years to supporting Michigan’s fruit and specialty crop growers. She has been instrumental in securing funding, expanding market opportunities, and addressing key industry issues.
Her career began with Michigan Farm Bureau (MFB) in 1985, later transitioning to Michigan Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Association (MACMA), where she played a key role in the apple and asparagus industries.
Throughout her career, Drake has worked on critical agricultural policies, including fire blight research funding, apple market loss assistance programs, and disaster relief efforts.
She also helped establish USDA programs, such as the fresh-cut apple slices initiative and bonus buys for processed apples, which generated $110 million for the apple processing industry.
Michigan growers, industry leaders, and policymakers widely respect Drake for her selfless dedication and leadership. Many describe her as a trusted advocate who always puts growers first, helping them navigate challenges in labor, pricing, and marketing.
Drake’s influence has shaped Michigan’s apple and cherry industries, ensuring long-term sustainability for growers. Her commitment to building relationships with USDA, Congress, and local farmers has made a lasting impact on Michigan agriculture.
MSU will officially recognize Drake for her outstanding contributions during the ANR Awards Program on March 7.
