Michigan Youth Livestock Scholarship Fund Accepting 2025 Applications

By Andi Anderson

The Michigan Youth Livestock Scholarship Fund (MYLSF) is now accepting applications for its 2025 scholarship program.

This opportunity is open to Michigan residents who are high school seniors or recent graduates pursuing higher education. Applications must be submitted electronically by May 1, 2025.

The scholarship program offers two types of awards: general scholarships for youth exhibitors at the Michigan Livestock Expo or Michigan Dairy Expo and statewide scholarships for those who have exhibited at local, county, or statewide livestock events for at least three years before applying.

Funds for the scholarships come from the annual Michigan Livestock Expo Sale-Abration auction and charitable donations. The MYLSF is overseen by an 11-member board, including representatives from the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD).

Since its establishment in 2000, MYLSF has awarded over $840,000 in scholarships to students excelling in livestock exhibitions. In 2024, a total of $50,500 was distributed among 43 recipients.

In 2025, select applicants will have the chance to interview for scholarships up to $5,000 before the Sale-Abration event.

Applications and eligibility details are available online. For inquiries, contact Jeff Haarer at 517-896-2236 or HaarerJ@Michigan.gov, or Sheila Burkhardt at 248-474-6672 or sheila.burkhardt@mimilk.com.
