Exercise Caution When Buying Venison Online

Exercise Caution When Buying Venison Online

By Andi Anderson

As Michigan's regular firearm deer season approaches, the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) urges consumers to exercise caution when purchasing venison or venison products online. During and after the deer hunting season, there is often an increase in illegal venison sales through online marketplaces.

Why You Should Be Cautious:

  • Not all online sellers of venison or venison products are licensed and inspected by MDARD.
  • Improperly prepared or handled food products can become contaminated with harmful bacteria, leading to foodborne illness.
  • Purchasing food from a licensed and inspected source, along with proper preparation, cooking, and storage, helps reduce the risk of foodborne illness.

How to Purchase Venison Safely

  • Look for labels that list ingredients, weight, name, address, and contact information of the licensed food business.
  • Ask to see a copy of the seller's food license.
  • Purchase venison and venison products from licensed and inspected sources, such as MDARD-licensed retail grocery stores or wholesale facilities.

By following these guidelines, consumers can protect themselves from potential health hazards and ensure they are purchasing safe and high-quality venison products. For more food safety tips and information, visit www.Michigan.gov/foodsafety.
