As Michigan residents finalize their Thanksgiving plans, the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) emphasizes the significance of safeguarding pets' health and safety during the holiday season.
Dr. Nora Wineland, DVM, MS, DACVPM, State Veterinarian, urges pet owners to consider their furry companions' needs during festive gatherings. "Amidst the celebrations, it's essential to prioritize our pets' well-being, ensuring they are comfortable and free from added stress," emphasized Wineland.
Here are six simple yet crucial tips to ensure pets remain safe and happy during Thanksgiving:
- Mindful Feeding: Certain holiday foods can harm pets, including fatty meats, chocolate, grapes, onions, and bones. Opt for pet-friendly treats like cheese, unseasoned vegetables (green beans, pumpkin, sweet potatoes) in moderation.
- Garbage Guard: Secure trash bags containing bones, strings, or food packaging in closed trash cans away from pets' reach to avoid ingestion.
- Decorative Distance: Keep decorations, candles, lights, and potentially hazardous items like potpourris and festive plants out of pets' access.
- ID Protection: Ensure pets wear updated identification tags or have microchips with current contact information to aid in their safe return if they wander off.
- Quiet Retreat: Create a peaceful space for pets away from the bustling activities, ensuring it's stocked with their essentials for prolonged solitude if needed.
- Travel Ready: If traveling with pets, consult a vet to ascertain necessary documentation and precautions for smooth and safe travel.
Implementing these guidelines can safeguard pets during Thanksgiving. In case of any health concerns, pet owners are encouraged to contact their veterinarians.
