Explore wheat varieties at MSU field day

By Andi Anderson

Michigan State University Extension, in collaboration with the Michigan Wheat Program, is hosting a regional wheat field day in Huron County. This event provides a unique opportunity for local farmers and agricultural enthusiasts to engage directly with wheat experts in a real-world setting.

The field day will be led by Dennis Pennington, a wheat specialist from MSU Extension, and Jenna Falor. Attendees will have the chance to walk through state wheat variety trials, discuss various wheat strains, management practices, and current challenges in pest management. Safety protocols for applying agricultural products will also be addressed during the event.

Hosted by Darwin Sneller, the field day will take place at the southeast corner of Sebewaing Road and Bay Port Road near Sebewaing, Michigan. This setup offers a more intimate setting that encourages personal interaction and detailed discussions about the ongoing research projects in wheat cultivation.

Participants are encouraged to bring any wheat samples that appear unhealthy; Dennis Pennington will be available to analyze these samples and diagnose potential issues.

This event is also an excellent opportunity for professionals looking to earn continuing education credits. It has been approved for two restricted use pesticide (RUP) credits in Private Core, Commercial Core, or 1A. Additionally, two certified crop adviser (CCA) credits for crop management are available.

No prior registration is required to attend the field day. Light refreshments will be provided courtesy of the Michigan Wheat Program. Join to deepen your understanding of wheat production, directly engage with specialists, and enjoy a day of learning and networking in the field.
