A significant investment in agricultural research is expected to strengthen the future of potato production in Idaho. Federal lawmakers have included $5 million in funding for upgrades at the Aberdeen Research and Extension Center, a leading facility dedicated to potato research and breeding.
The funding is part of the Fiscal Year 2027 Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration Appropriations Bill. The investment will support improvements to storage and greenhouse facilities that are used for research projects focused on potato production and variety development.
“Potatoes are one of Idaho’s most important crops, and our state leads the nation in production. The University of Idaho has conducted phenomenal research on various crops and provided valuable information to producers about these key agricultural products,” said Rep. Simpson.
He added, “As the University continues to expand its research to meet industry needs, it is crucial that funding keeps pace with the research efforts. I am proud to support this project, and as we continue to support the potato industry, we should strive for the goal that ten out of ten Americans associate potatoes with Idaho, rather than just nine out of ten!”
Researchers at the Aberdeen Center study numerous issues affecting potato growers, including plant diseases, pests, weed management, cropping systems, and the development of improved potato varieties. Modern facilities are considered essential for maintaining effective research programs and supporting long-term agricultural progress.
“We are thankful for Congressman Simpson’s continued support and advocacy for Idaho agriculture. Funds secured by Congressman Simpson will allow us to make critical updates to potato storage and greenhouse facilities at our Aberdeen Research and Extension Center, advancing the essential research we conduct in partnership with USDA-ARS,” said Leslie D. Edgar, J.R. Simplot Endowed Dean of the University of Idaho College of Agricultural and Life Sciences.
She added, “These updates will allow us to better support Idaho’s $8.5 billion potato industry and ensure the U.S. has resilient potato varieties for the future.”
Industry leaders believe these upgrades will help strengthen collaboration between researchers and producers while encouraging innovation across the potato sector. Improved facilities can help scientists develop varieties that produce higher yields, resist disease, and meet changing market needs.
The Idaho potato industry is an important economic driver and contributes billions of dollars annually to the state's economy. Continued investment in research helps ensure growers have access to the latest technologies and scientific knowledge needed to remain competitive.
Agricultural stakeholders also highlighted the importance of advancing sustainable farming practices and building resilience against environmental and production challenges. Research facilities play a key role in developing solutions that benefit farmers and consumers alike.
