Governor Gretchen Whitmer has officially proclaimed March as Michigan Food and Agriculture Month, a tribute to the hardworking farmers, the array of products cultivated and processed in the state, and the partnerships that sustain Michigan's vibrant food and agriculture industry. The designation aims to honor the sector's contributions, which amount to an impressive $104.7 billion annually, creating jobs for over 800,000 Michiganders.
"This March, we salute every individual and business that contributes tirelessly to shape Michigan's robust food and agriculture industry," stated Governor Whitmer. "From our dedicated farmers and producers to the diligent truck drivers, each plays a crucial role in maintaining Michigan's status as a global agricultural powerhouse."
Director Boring, coming from a farm family himself, emphasized the personal fulfillment derived from being part of Michigan's food and agriculture sector. Whether one is a veterinarian, a food inspector, or a farmer, involvement in this industry signifies contributing to something greater than oneself, enhancing the quality of life for Michigan residents.
Throughout Michigan Food and Agriculture Month, the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) will spotlight various facets of the state's food and agriculture sector. With production agriculture, food processing, and related businesses employing 17.2 percent of Michigan's population, amounting to 805,000 people, the industry significantly contributes to the state's economy.
Sarah Monte, Outreach Director at Marquette Food Co-op, highlighted Michigan's leadership in agriculture production and its commitment to equitable and sustainable food systems. March serves as an opportunity to support state-wide projects and local community initiatives that promote healthy communities.
Randy Thelen, President & CEO of The Right Place, emphasized Michigan's continuous investments across the agriculture-to-food value chain. He recognized the positive impact of Michigan agriculture on communities, making March a special time to focus on the dedicated farmers and food processors.
As part of the month-long celebration, MDARD is also observing National Weights and Measures Week from March 1-7, highlighting the department's efforts to ensure fair trade and consumer protection.
The festivities include the launch of the 2024 Michigan Agriculture magazine on February 29, National Weights and Measures Week from March 1-7, and a special celebration on March 8 where MDARD and McDonald’s acknowledge their partnership in supporting Michigan producers.
March 20 will see MDARD participating in March is Reading Month, partnering with Lansing School Publics to read food and agriculture books to classrooms. The month concludes with the celebration of National Agriculture Day on March 22, recognizing the industry's significant contributions to the nation.
Throughout March, MDARD's social media channels will feature inspiring stories about Michigan's food and agriculture, showcasing the state's agricultural heritage and the individuals who contribute to its success.
