The Groundwork Center for Resilient Communities has announced plans to support the development of local food distribution networks and market opportunities in 16 counties in West Michigan. The nonprofit organization will work with farmers, distributors, and other stakeholders to identify gaps in the existing food system and develop strategies for improving access to fresh, healthy, and locally grown food.
The initiative will focus on building partnerships between farmers and local businesses, such as restaurants and grocery stores, to increase demand for locally sourced food. It will also seek to address barriers to distribution, such as transportation and storage challenges, and explore opportunities for expanding food processing and packaging capabilities.
According to Groundwork Center executive director Hans Voss, the project aims to create a more resilient and equitable food system in West Michigan. By strengthening the connections between farmers and consumers, the initiative could help to support the local economy and improve public health outcomes.
The Groundwork Center has a track record of success in promoting sustainable and resilient communities, and its latest initiative is likely to generate significant interest and support from stakeholders across the region.
