GSI Pre-Harvest Grain Dryer Tips

GSI Pre-Harvest Grain Dryer Tips

In preparation for the upcoming harvest season, GSI is emphasizing the importance of inspecting grain dryers beforehand to ensure they function smoothly and safely. By checking for wear and tear that could compromise performance, farmers can prevent potential issues during the fall harvest.

Randy Sheley, a specialist in GSI's dryer products, stresses the significance of conducting a comprehensive preseason check. He recommends involving a servicing dealer for a thorough assessment, underscoring the importance of preserving grain quality.

Sheley provides these maintenance suggestions, guided by the dryer's owner manual:

• Prioritize Safety: Before inspecting or servicing electrical or mechanical components, always lock out the electrical main safety disconnect. Adhere to safety guidelines in the manual and avoid attempting electrical or gas repairs without appropriate training.

• Thorough Cleaning: Ensure all parts of the dryer, such as supply augers, downspouts, and columns, are entirely free of debris or bird nests. If not done last fall, thoroughly clean the control box and ensure internal areas are devoid of fines or debris.

• Thorough Inspection: Check belts for signs of wear, age-induced hardness, and proper tension. Replace any belts that appear questionable. With valves closed and lines emptied for safety, inspect gas hoses and connections to confirm their integrity. Ensure there are no obstructions, like insect nests, in the burner that might hinder proper operation.

• Trial Run: Before loading grain, perform a test run to confirm the dryer's operation.

To begin, carefully activate the main power and ensure all emergency stop switches are engaged. Initiate the control circuit to verify safety and operational screens. Test loading, metering, and unload systems while assessing automatic safety and shutdown mechanisms. This step is critical before loading the dryer with grain to ensure the unload system functions properly.

• Gas System Check: Test the safety system by starting fans and burners with the gas supply turned off. The dryer should shut down within a minute.

• Full Operation Check: After gradually opening the gas supply, start fans and burners to ensure proper lighting and operation. Verify that there are no unusual voids or unusual colors in the flame. Note that in some dryer models, burners may not function until the dryer is filled with grain.

• First Grain Load: Confirm that the columns fill accurately and that the dryer's loading process shuts down automatically after reaching capacity. Perform a final inspection after starting the fan and burner to ensure proper gas pressures and temperature control system functioning. Utilize the manual to initiate regular dryer operations.

By following these expert recommendations, farmers can maintain the efficient and safe operation of their grain dryers, securing a successful harvest season.
