Beekeepers across Michigan are invited to attend a special presentation on honey bee pheromones hosted by the Seven Ponds Beekeeping Club. The session, led by Ana Heck, Apiculture Extension Educator with Michigan State University Extension, will provide valuable insights into how bees use scent communication to coordinate colony activities and signal environmental changes.
During the workshop, participants will learn how pheromones—chemical signals bees release—govern behaviours such as swarming, foraging, and defense. Heck will explain how subtle hive aromas like banana and lemon scents can indicate different colony responses, helping beekeepers better understand hive health and behavior.
This in-person-only event offers an opportunity for both seasoned and beginning beekeepers to deepen their practical knowledge. There will be no online broadcast or recording, ensuring an interactive and focused learning experience.
Attendees can also connect with local beekeeping clubs in Michigan and access additional educational materials through MSU Extension and the Michigan Pollinator Initiative. Resources include the MSU Beekeeping & Pollinators website, YouTube channel, and email newsletter, which offer guidance on bee management, pollinator protection, and apiculture research.
Michigan State University remains committed to providing inclusive educational opportunities. Participants requiring accessibility accommodations are encouraged to contact Ana Heck at least two weeks prior to the event.
This educational session is supported by the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture through the Crop Protection and Pest Management Program, advancing research and outreach for pollinator health.
