Michigan State University AgBioResearch has named Dr. Kang Xia as its new Associate Director, beginning her role on April 14, 2025. Xia joins from Virginia Tech, where she served as Associate Director of the Virginia Agricultural Experiment Station (VAES) and Director of the Center for Advanced Innovation in Agriculture.

At MSU AgBioResearch, Xia will support fundamental and applied research efforts across various university disciplines. She will collaborate with affiliated faculty to strengthen research initiatives, secure large grants, and promote innovative solutions in agriculture, food systems, and environmental management.

A major focus of her role will be building connections with Michigan’s agricultural stakeholders. Xia plans to engage with farmer groups and organizations to understand local challenges and guide research that benefits Michigan communities.

“I’m committed to supporting faculty, especially young researchers, in overcoming challenges and achieving their goals,” said Xia.

Her academic journey includes a bachelor’s degree from Beijing Agricultural University, a master’s from Louisiana State University, and a PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Xia has held faculty roles at Kansas State, Georgia, Mississippi State, and Virginia Tech, leading over $19 million in funded research and publishing widely in peer-reviewed journals.

Xia’s leadership background includes work in precision agriculture, biotechnology, cybersecurity, and agrivoltaics. MSU AgBioResearch Director George Smith said, “She brings a deep understanding of the land-grant mission and will champion the efforts of our researchers.”

MSU AgBioResearch supports around 300 researchers across Michigan. The program has created impactful initiatives like Project GREEEN and the Michigan Alliance for Animal Agriculture. With Xia’s leadership, the institution aims to expand its reach and enhance agricultural resilience statewide.
