Last Chance to Comment on Michigan Agriculture Practices Changes

Last Chance to Comment on Michigan Agriculture Practices Changes

Michigan residents, farmers, and stakeholders are reminded to share their input on proposed changes for 2024 regarding Generally Accepted Agricultural and Management Practices (GAAMPs). These guidelines were established in response to the 1981 Michigan Right to Farm Act, aimed at safeguarding the environment and ensuring the sustainability of the state's agrifood system. Adopting GAAMPs not only aids farmers but also shields them from potential nuisance lawsuits.

The existing GAAMPs cover various aspects such as farm animal care, cranberry production, farm markets, irrigation water usage, manure management, nutrient utilization, pesticide usage for pest control, and site selection with odor control for livestock facilities.

To keep these practices current, committees of experts regularly assess and suggest updates. The deadline for submitting comments on the proposed changes is August 25, 2023, at 5 p.m. The upcoming deadline emphasizes the need for prompt participation.

Comments can be shared through email or U.S. mail. The virtual public meeting is scheduled for August 25 at 1 p.m. during which opinions can be voiced. All input received by the deadline will be taken into account.

For those interested in reviewing the proposed 2024 GAAMPs, they are encouraged to do so before providing their input.

Comments can be submitted in the following ways:

• Email: Send your comments to MDARD-RTF@Michigan.gov.

• U.S. Mail: Mail your comments to MDARD Environmental Stewardship Division, P.O. Box 30017, Lansing, MI 48909. Make sure comments are received by August 25.

• Virtual Meeting: Participate in the virtual meeting on August 25 at 1 p.m. Join via this link or call 248-509-0316 and use the ID: 857610684#.

This is an important opportunity for those invested in Michigan's agricultural practices to have their voices heard before any changes are finalized
