The Michigan 4-H Dairy Conference made its exciting return on March 1-2, 2025, hosted by Michigan State University Extension.
The event welcomed over 45 4-H youth and more than 20 volunteers from across the state, many attending for the first time. For some, this was their first introduction to 4-H dairy programming.
This overnight conference offered a variety of hands-on sessions led by professionals from the dairy and agriculture industries. Topics included artificial intelligence in the dairy sector, dairy cattle reproduction, uterine immunity, nutrition, judging, and necropsies.
One highlight was the dissection of udders and reproductive tracts, giving participants a deeper understanding of animal health.
Participants also toured the MSU Dairy Plant Processing Center, providing an inside look at how milk products are processed. Youth had the opportunity to practice dairy cattle judging and connect with peers and volunteers from other counties.
The event served not only as an educational platform but also as a space for networking and building lasting connections.
The conference also introduced attendees to broader opportunities in 4-H dairy programs, such as the National 4-H Dairy Conference held annually in Madison, Wisconsin.
Youth participants shared positive feedback. Sofia B. said she learned more about judging, giving reasons, and dairy cattle health and reproduction. Kylynne M. mentioned enjoying hands-on activities and learning how artificial intelligence helps monitor cow health.
She also appreciated speaking directly with the conference speakers. First-time attendee Griffyn V. expressed his enthusiasm, saying he would attend the conference every day if possible.
The Michigan 4-H Dairy Conference continues to be a vital event for teaching youth practical skills and new developments in the dairy industry. It inspires future involvement in agriculture and builds knowledge that benefits both individuals and the dairy sector.
