Michigan Agriculture Breaks Export Records In 2024

By Andi Anderson

Michigan’s agriculture industry continues to thrive, setting a new export record in 2024 with a $282 million increase over the previous year. The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) reported total agricultural-related exports reaching $2.9 billion, underscoring the state’s growing influence in global markets.

The state’s top export destinations include Canada, Mexico, South Korea, Japan, and China. Together, these markets generated an impressive $2.18 billion in economic impact, reinforcing Michigan’s reputation as a key player in international food and agriculture trade.

According to MDARD data, the largest export category was processed food products, contributing $636 million. Other major exports included sugar beet, soybean, soybean residue, brewing waste, and animal feed at $393 million; dairy products at $303 million; pasta, bread, and starches at $285 million; and wood products at $252 million.

“This record-breaking success for our agriculture, food, and forestry companies demonstrates that Michigan agriculture consistently delivers high-quality products in high demand both domestically and internationally,” said Tom Boring, MDARD director. “With so much uncertainty caused by new tariffs, these record numbers serve as a testament to the economic prosperity we can foster with the right support and a level playing field. We're proud to support Michigan farmers and producers as they expand their markets.”

Michigan remains one of the most agriculturally diverse states in the U.S., producing over 300 commodities. It ranks among national leaders in crops such as apples, dry beans, cucumbers, tart cherries, blueberries, and asparagus. The state’s rich soil, favourable climate, and proximity to the Great Lakes create ideal growing conditions for a wide range of crops.

Michigan’s favorable environment has also fueled a booming wine industry. As a top 10 grape-producing state, Michigan is home to more than 175 wineries that collectively produce about four million gallons of wine each year.

With record-setting exports and expanding markets, Michigan’s agriculture industry continues to drive economic growth, proving that its farmers and producers are ready to compete—and win—on the global stage.
