Michigan farmers are facing a delayed start to spring planting due to recent rain and snow showers. The USDA NASS reported only 1.8 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending April 7th, 2024.
Slow Progress, Watchful Waiting:
- Most producers are waiting for fields to dry out before starting planting activities.
- Some oat planting has begun in the Southeast Lower Peninsula.
- Winter wheat is slowly emerging from dormancy across the state.
- Other ongoing activities include manure spreading, fertilizer application, and tilling.
Fruit Update:
- Temperamental weather with fluctuating temperatures has impacted fruit development.
- Recent cool conditions have slowed bud development, keeping them in a holding pattern.
- Despite some reported king bloom damage, overall fruit crop prospects remain good.
Regional Fruit Development:
- Southwest: Early apple varieties are between first and late tight cluster. Some report peach trees reaching full pink.
- West Central: Apples range from dormant to silver tip. Tart cherry buds are showing signs of development.
- Southeast: Blueberries are at bud swell with some early varieties starting to break bud.
Overall, the rain showers provided much-needed moisture, but they also delayed fieldwork. Farmers are waiting for drier conditions to begin planting essential crops.
