The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) is celebrating the approval of Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s fiscal year 2025 bipartisan budget. This budget provides essential funding for the department and significant investments in Michigan’s growing food and agriculture industry.

“Under Governor Whitmer’s leadership, this bipartisan budget reflects her unwavering commitment to Michigan’s food and agricultural industry and our rural communities,” said MDARD Director Tim Boring.

“This bipartisan budget allows MDARD to move forward with our timely efforts on climate resiliency, environmental sustainability, and regenerative agriculture research.

Also included is $3 million for a new ‘Farm to Family Program’ to support regenerative farming, bolster agriculture supply chains, and promote Michigan food products through a cooperative approach, generating direct economic impacts.

We’re working to ensure that ‘Made in Michigan’ is recognized around the globe. These bold investments highlight why Michigan has become, and will continue to be, a destination for food and agriculture businesses.”

The budget for fiscal year 2025 includes a total ongoing funding of $157 million, of which $89 million comes from the state’s general fund. This funding will enable MDARD to continue its work in promoting agricultural innovation and sustainability.

One of the key highlights of the budget is the new Farm to Family Program. This program is designed to support regenerative farming practices, strengthen agricultural supply chains, and promote Michigan food products.

By investing in this program, the state aims to create direct economic benefits and enhance the visibility of Michigan's agricultural products on a global scale.

In addition to the Farm to Family Program, the budget allocates funds for climate resiliency and environmental sustainability initiatives. These efforts are crucial for ensuring the long-term health and productivity of Michigan’s agricultural sector.

The 2025 budget reflects a strong commitment to Michigan’s rural communities and the food and agriculture industry. With these bold investments, the state is poised to continue its growth as a hub for agricultural businesses and innovation.

Director Boring emphasized the importance of these investments in positioning Michigan as a leader in the agricultural industry. “These bold investments highlight why Michigan has become, and will continue to be, a destination for food and agriculture businesses,” he said.

In conclusion, Michigan’s 2025 budget marks a significant step forward for the state’s food and agriculture industry. By focusing on sustainability, climate resiliency, and regenerative farming, the state is investing in a prosperous future for its agricultural sector.
