Michigan poultry farms face bird flu threat

Michigan poultry farms face bird flu threat

By Andi Anderson

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) has been detected in two counties in Michigan, according to the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD). The Michigan State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory identified the virus in a backyard flock in Jackson County, marking the first case in the area since 2022. Additionally, two commercial poultry facilities in Ottawa County were affected, with this being the fourth case in December alone.

"Everyone has a role to play in protecting against HPAI and limiting its capability to take hold and spread," said MDARD director Tim Boring. "Following biosecurity protocols, like using personal protective equipment when caring for animals, is critical to ensuring the health of humans and animals."

Although there were two human cases of HPAI detected in Michigan earlier this year, both individuals were farmworkers. Authorities have assured that the risk to the general public remains low. The virus is highly contagious and can spread through direct contact between infected animals, as well as through contaminated equipment, clothing, and footwear.

In response to the outbreak, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has implemented a nationwide testing strategy for raw, unpasteurized milk samples to monitor the virus's spread. To reduce the risk of transmission, MDARD recommends several measures for poultry owners, such as keeping domestic and wild birds separated, disinfecting boots and equipment, and ensuring poultry feed is protected from wild birds or rodents. These steps are vital in curbing the spread of the virus and safeguarding both animal and human health.
