Mid-Michigan farmers are currently experiencing frustration due to the recent deluge of rain that has been falling in the Great Lakes State. According to Theresa Sisung, the industry relations specialist with the Michigan Farm Bureau, the farmers are keeping a close eye on the situation.
Brett Roberts, a farmer in Eaton County, is around two weeks away from commencing spring planting but is dismayed at the present conditions. The crops that are currently in the ground, like winter wheat, are inundated in many areas. Roberts warned that if the rain doesn't drain off quickly, it will perish. Moreover, if the rainfall persists, it will inevitably postpone the planting season.
This delay, especially for corn and soybeans, could result in reduced yields in the fall and harvest delays. Several mid-Michigan communities issued flood warnings due to heavy storms over the past week. After facing drought conditions in the winter and fall, the farmers hope the rainfall slows down soon.
