MPPA Powers 6,000 Homes with Solar Energy

MPPA Powers 6,000 Homes with Solar Energy

By Andi Anderson

The Michigan Public Power Agency (MPPA) announced on April 7 that it has begun a power purchase agreement for 25 megawatts (MW) of the 125 MW Brandt Woods solar project in Calhoun County. This agreement aligns with MPPA’s ongoing commitment to providing clean, reliable, and affordable energy.

MPPA’s share of the project will generate enough energy to power approximately 6,000 homes annually. Thirteen of MPPA’s 22 municipal member utilities will benefit from the renewable power generated by this portion of the solar project. “Brandt Woods solar is another example of MPPA members making long-term commitments to get new renewable resources built in Michigan,” said Patrick Bowland, CEO & general manager of MPPA. “We appreciate the efforts of AES in bringing this impressive project to commercial operation.”

AES, the developer of the Brandt Woods solar project, focused on preserving the local environment and enhancing the region’s pollinator health. The company selected native plant species for the site to support local wildlife, such as honey bees, which also benefits nearby agricultural activities.

This project is part of the state’s efforts to meet its renewable energy standards set by recent clean energy legislation. By investing in projects like Brandt Woods, MPPA is helping Michigan’s public utilities meet the growing demand for clean energy while maintaining cost-effective and environmentally responsible power supply.

In a related development, the Grand Haven Board of Light & Power (BLP) added 2.2 MW of solar energy to its portfolio as part of its partnership with MPPA. This new development will provide enough energy to power 528 homes annually. Grand Haven BLP continues to build its renewable energy portfolio with several solar, wind, and landfill gas projects.

As Michigan’s public power utilities advance in their renewable energy goals, projects like Brandt Woods will play a crucial role in shaping the state’s energy future, benefiting both residents and the environment.
