MSU and Consumers Energy Empower Future Michigan Graduates

By Andi Anderson

Michigan State University (MSU) and Consumers Energy recently celebrated a strong and growing partnership that is helping shape the future of Michigan's workforce. With a generous $250,000 donation from the Consumers Energy Foundation, the collaboration focuses on empowering students in MSU’s College of Engineering and encouraging them to pursue careers in Michigan.

The donation supports the Cornerstone and Residential Experience (CoRe) program, a unique academic and residential initiative for first-year engineering students. The program is based in East Wilson Hall, which now features a redesigned lobby where the celebration was held. The event welcomed guests including state representative Julie Brixie.

MSU President Dr. Kevin M. Guskiewicz expressed his gratitude, noting that the CoRe program is a key asset in helping students succeed both academically and professionally. “We’re grateful for the continued and generous partnership of Consumers Energy as Michigan State trains the workforce of today and tomorrow,” he said.

Chris Fultz, Consumers Energy’s vice president of natural gas operations, highlighted the long-standing relationship between the company and MSU. He noted that many MSU graduates have found meaningful careers with Consumers Energy and other top companies in the state.

The partnership dates back to 2009, when Consumers Energy Foundation first supported the college with a $150,000 gift. The foundation focuses on advancing people, the planet, and prosperity across Michigan.

Today, the funding continues to support CoRe’s goal of developing “the whole engineer.” Students gain access to academic advising, tutoring, corporate tours, professional seminars, and social events. Consumers Energy staff regularly engage with students to introduce them to the energy industry and career opportunities.

This collaboration between education and industry strengthens the local economy and helps Michigan retain skilled graduates, preparing them for success in high-demand fields across the state.
