MSU Extension guides 2025 Farm Bill program choices

MSU Extension guides 2025 Farm Bill program choices

By Andi Anderson

With the extension of the 2018 Farm Bill, farmers must decide between Price Loss Coverage (PLC) and Agricultural Loss Coverage (ARC) for the 2025 production year. To assist in this process, Michigan State University (MSU) Extension is hosting a free webinar series titled Farm Bill Program and Crop Insurance Decisions – What Fits Your Farm?

The webinars will take place on January 21 at 1 p.m. and February 11 at 6:30 p.m. These sessions will explore options for 2025 Farm Bill programs and include updates on policies and payments from 2024. Farmers will receive guidance on selecting the most suitable program based on their needs.

Participants will examine two key choices: selecting between Agricultural Risk Coverage - County (ARC-CO) and Price Loss Coverage (PLC). ARC-CO provides revenue-based payments when farm revenue falls below a set guarantee, while PLC offers price-based payments when prices drop below a reference price.

A second decision involves the Supplemental Coverage Option (SCO) insurance policy. SCO, which requires a premium, is compatible only with PLC. Depending on planting intentions and base acres, the SCO-PLC combination may provide better protection than ARC-CO.

The MSU Farm Bill Analyzer decision tool, updated for 2025, will be highlighted during the sessions. This tool evaluates risk scenarios and compares program benefits to help farmers make informed choices. However, producers should consult with crop specialists or insurance agents for premium and payment estimates related to SCO.

The Farm Policy and Risk Management Series is free, but registration is required. Farmers can register for the webinars by visiting the MSU Extension website.

These sessions aim to simplify the decision-making process for farmers, offering expert advice and practical tools to ensure better risk management and financial security for the 2025 production season.
