MSU Launches Fruit Pest Management Training Course

MSU Launches Fruit Pest Management Training Course

By Andi Anderson

Michigan State University’s Pesticide Safety Education Program (PSEP) has introduced a new online, self‑paced course designed to help pesticide applicators strengthen their fruit pest management knowledge.

This course supports applicators seeking flexible training options as they work to stay current with best practices in the field. It also provides an opportunity for certified applicators in Michigan to earn Restricted Use Pesticide (RUP) recertification credits.

MSU PSEP plays an important role in supporting Michigan’s agricultural workforce by offering educational programs, certification preparation, and professional development opportunities.

The addition of this new course responds to increasing demand for training formats that allow learners to progress at their own speed, review key concepts as needed, and fit learning into busy schedules.

Developed by MSU PSEP specialists, the course follows the structure of the Fruit Pest Management Manual for Pesticide Applicators. It includes four learning modules that cover essential topics related to integrated pest, disease, and weed management.

The content is arranged to match the manual’s major chapters, making it easier for participants to understand the material and connect it to real‑world fruit production challenges.

After completing the course, certified pesticide applicators in Michigan may request four RUP credits in Private Core or Category 1C. It also serves as partial preparation for individuals planning to take the Michigan Pesticide Applicator Category 1C Certification Exam.

The modules review important concepts and reinforce material found in the Fruit Pest Management Manual, making the course a valuable study tool.

Safa Alzohairy, the program’s pesticide safety education coordinator, emphasized the value of the new course. “This self-paced fruit pest management course gives pesticide applicators the flexibility to build their pest control knowledge on their own schedule while earning valuable RUP recertification credits,” Alzohairy said. “It covers the essentials for successful fruit production.”

The new fruit pest management course is part of MSU PSEP’s ongoing effort to expand self‑paced learning options for agricultural professionals. A complementary vegetable pest management course is also available for applicators who want additional training and a broader understanding of crop protection strategies.

By offering flexible online learning opportunities, MSU PSEP continues to support the growth, education, and safety of Michigan’s agricultural community. These programs help applicators stay informed, maintain certifications, and apply safe and effective pest management practices in fruit and vegetable production.
