The 56th annual Spartan Stampede Rodeo returns February 14–16 at the Farm Bureau Pavilion, drawing thousands of spectators and competitors.
As this long-standing tradition continues, momentum is also building for a major expansion of one of Michigan’s most heavily used agricultural facilities.
Nearly a decade ago, the MSU Rodeo Club made a lead gift to help expand the Pavilion. Their pledge aimed to increase warmup space, improve safety and create more year-round versatility. “This group of students decided to donate that money,” said Brian Nielsen, professor and long-time faculty advisor. “They believed then that expanding the Pavilion was the smartest investment for future students and for Michigan agriculture. They put their money where their mouth is.”
Student leaders emphasize the practical benefits of expansion. “Warm-up space gets very congested during rodeo week,” said Rodeo Club President Eliza LaFavers. “A second arena gives competitors more room to work with their animals and creates a better flow for everyone involved.” She also noted that multiple campus organizations use the facility, making expansion beneficial to the entire community.
The Spartan Stampede, established in 1969, is organized almost entirely by students. Members manage sponsorships, coordinate event logistics and design the arena experience.
The club has earned eight Indoor Rodeo of the Year awards, reflecting its commitment and professionalism. “On paper, we are a rodeo club. But we have students from all backgrounds,” said Nielsen, “So what I care most about is developing people, giving them an experience that will be beneficial for them for life. And that's what this club does.”
The weekend includes the Queens Competition, Youth Day and a Charity Jackpot supporting Rodeo for Lives.
For Nielsen, the 2026 rodeo marks his final performance after decades of service. “This has become such a part of who I am,” he said. “There will be sadness, but I am leaving knowing we accomplished what we needed to accomplish.”
With strong student leadership and growing alumni support, the Pavilion expansion represents the next chapter in strengthening Michigan’s agricultural community.
