Standing Corn Helps Stretch Winter Cattle Feed

According to Aaron Berger, Nebraska Extension Educator, dry weather and ongoing drought conditions are creating significant challenges for livestock producers. Pastures have produced less forage; hay yields have fallen, and feed supplies are expected to remain tight throughout the coming winter season.

As a result, producers are searching for cost-effective ways to keep cattle fed while maintaining animal performance. One management option receiving increased attention is grazing standing corn together with corn residue after harvesting.

Corn residue includes the leaves, husks, stalks, and cobs that remain in the field. These materials can provide a valuable feed source for beef cattle. Traditionally, producers have relied on residue grazing to support cows during the fall and winter months.

By intentionally leaving strips of standing corn in selected areas, producers can provide additional energy through grain consumption while cattle continue to graze residue. This combination can substantially increase the amount of feed available from each acre.

Research and field experience suggest that residue from higher-yielding corn fields can provide many days of grazing. Adding controlled access to standing grains may extend those feeding days significantly, allowing producers to make better use of limited forage resources.

Current market conditions are making this approach especially attractive. Hay and forage supplies remain expensive due to drought impacts, while corn prices have generally remained near production costs. This relationship improves the value of corn as a cattle feed source.

For cows entering winter in thin body condition, the extra energy supplied by corn can support weight gain and improve overall condition prior to calving. This may help strengthen herd performance during the next production cycle.

Producers adopting this system should follow sound management practices. Grain intake should increase gradually over a period of several days to help cattle adjust safely. Balanced supplementation with protein, minerals, and vitamins may also be needed to support rumen's function and animal health.

The financial benefits extend beyond feed savings. Leaving some corn unharvested can reduce expenses associated with combining, hauling, and handling grain. In addition, grazing cattle returns nutrients directly to the field, which can provide value through natural fertilizer replacement.

Field setup is another important factor. Strategic placement of standing corn strips, access to water, and proper fencing can improve grazing efficiency. Portable electric fencing systems are commonly used to regulate daily feed allocation.

Technology is also creating new opportunities. Virtual fencing tools may help producers control grazing patterns while reducing labor requirements. These systems can simplify the movement of cattle within larger grazing areas.

Feed budgets show that a standing corn and residue program can provide a lower-cost ratio compared to feeding purchased hay and supplemental feed sources alone. This advantage becomes even more important during years when forage supplies are limited.

While the concept of leaving grain in the field may seem unconventional, changing economic conditions are encouraging innovative solutions. Producers facing forage shortages may find that combining standing corn and residue grazing offers a practical way to extend feed supplies, reduce costs, and support cow performance throughout the winter.

As harvest approaches, evaluating all available feed resources will help producers prepare the months ahead and make informed decisions about winter feeding strategies.
