New MDARD Fund Boosts Green Practices for Food & Ag Businesses

The MDARD Wastewater Infrastructure Fund (WIF) Program has been set up to assist food and agriculture businesses in Michigan to upgrade their wastewater systems so they meet the state's environmental rules. Businesses that qualify should be located in Michigan, have specific permits from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE), and be following the state's regulations.

The costs that can be covered for wastewater investments include the following:

• Prework – Sampling and Analysis

• Site Review Work

• Engineering Design

• Installation and Labor

• Equipment

• Construction Materials

• Land Application Equipment

• Business Plan

• Operation & Maintenance Manual

• Sampling Analysis Plan

• Certified Operator Training

• Construction and Design

All grantees will be required to complete the following milestones:

• Creating a manual for the ongoing operation and maintenance.

• Documenting the actual construction details.

• Establishing a clear design plan.

• Formulating a plan for managing discharges.

• Obtaining the necessary permit or certificate from EGLE related to groundwater discharge.

To apply, companies need to first fill out an online form on the MDARD grant page. MDARD staff will review the form and get in touch with the companies for more information and the next steps. They will prioritize businesses in Tier 1 and Tier 2. The program will accept applications until they use up all the funding.

The WIF Program is a great chance for food and agriculture businesses to improve their wastewater systems and help the environment. The program offers a good amount of funding and covers various costs, making it useful for businesses of different sizes.
