The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) has announced a crucial step in combatting bovine tuberculosis (TB) following the detection of the disease in a wild deer from Benzie County. MDARD is proposing to establish a testing order for specific areas in Benzie and Manistee counties to contain the spread of TB.
Here's what you need to know:
Public Hearing: On April 25, 2024, from 4:00 to 6:00 P.M., a public hearing will be held both in-person at Crystal Mountain and online. This is your chance to learn about the proposed order, ask questions, and share your comments.
Deadline for Comments: Submit your comments by 5:00 P.M. on Friday, May 10, 2024. Your input is vital in shaping the decision.
Proposed Order: The order would mandate testing for all cattle and bison herds in specific parts of Benzie and Manistee counties by December 31, 2024.
Next Steps: The proposed order will be reviewed by the Michigan Commission of Agriculture and Rural Development on May 15, 2024. If approved, it will go into effect on May 16, 2024.
