Resilient Farming: Beat Drought Stress in Forage Fields

Resilient Farming: Beat Drought Stress in Forage Fields

Michigan farmers facing the ongoing dry spell must proactively safeguard their forage fields to ensure their long-term health and productivity. Assessing individual farm needs is vital in determining the most suitable course of action. Here are some recommended strategies to optimize the longevity and future potential of drought-stressed forage fields.

  1. Mowing: If mowing is necessary, it is advised to raise the cutting height. This approach minimizes soil temperature fluctuations and adverse effects on root growth, aiding the field's recovery when rain returns. Leaving more residue in the field also helps reduce soil temperatures and supports beneficial soil biology.

  2. Grazing: If feasible, consider implementing a rotational grazing system. Allowing animals access to designated areas for specific durations enhances harvest efficiency and facilitates better post- grazing regrowth management. Maintaining a slightly higher residual height during grazing helps the plants recover and promotes improved future growth.

  3. Stock Management: Adjusting stock numbers may be necessary to alleviate pressure on struggling pastures. Destocking can be challenging but proves beneficial in preserving pasture quality during drought conditions. Planning ahead by purchasing winter hay supplies early helps mitigate potential cost increases.

  4. Diversify Feed Sources: Incorporate options such as grazing stalks or planting harvestable cover crops after wheat harvest to alleviate rising feed costs. Sub-dividing larger fields and fencing off new areas provide longer rest periods for recovery and improved pasture management.

By implementing these strategies, Michigan farmers can mitigate the effects of drought on their forage fields. Flexibility and adaptability remain key qualities for successful farm management during challenging times.
