Governor Gretchen Whitmer and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) have announced over $5.5 million in investments to support business development and community revitalization in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
These projects will protect 85 high-paying jobs in Houghton and Schoolcraft counties, boost economic growth, and improve local infrastructure.
The largest investment comes from Northern Hardwoods Lumber in Atlantic Mine, Houghton County. The company will install a new biomass boiler and back-pressure steam turbine, reducing operating costs and greenhouse gas emissions.
This $4.75 million investment will protect 85 jobs and extend the company’s operations. Northern Hardwoods received a $250,000 Michigan Business Development Program grant and a $1 million USDA Wood Innovations Grant to support the project.
Cedar Street Real Estate in Schoolcraft County will revitalize a historic bank building in downtown Manistique. The $820,000 project will convert unused office space into three residential apartments, addressing the community’s housing shortage.
The project is supported by a $250,000 Build MI Community grant from the Michigan Strategic Fund.
Governor Whitmer praised these projects, highlighting their importance to Michigan’s economic development and climate action efforts. The MEDC’s ongoing support ensures that Michigan remains a leader in innovation, job retention, and community growth.
