2024 field crops - weed control guide

2024 field crops - weed control guide

By Andi Anderson

The 2024 Field Crops Virtual Breakfast Series by Michigan State University Extension will conclude on Sept. 19, featuring a session on fall weed control. Christy Sprague, MSU Extension weed specialist, will lead the presentation, discussing fall herbicide application strategies to help manage winter annual, biennial, and perennial weeds.

The early harvest season this year provides a great opportunity for growers to tackle problematic weeds before winter.

Sprague will outline the benefits, challenges, and considerations of applying herbicides in the fall, especially for early-planted winter wheat. Fall applications have been shown to effectively control winter annual grasses, such as windgrass and roughstalk bluegrass, as well as a variety of winter annual broadleaf weeds.

Following Sprague’s presentation, MSU Extension climatologist Jeff Andresen will provide a weather update and forecast to help growers plan their weed control strategies. Attendees will also have the opportunity to ask questions and interact with Sprague and other MSU Extension specialists.

The Field Crops Virtual Breakfast Series, held live every Thursday morning from 7 to 8 a.m. between March and September, offers flexible topics that adjust to address current agricultural challenges.

Participants can earn restricted-use pesticide recertification (RUP) credits and certified crop advisor (CCA) continuing education units by attending the live sessions.

For those unable to attend live, recordings of the sessions are available for viewing at any time. Participation is free, but signing up for email notifications is required to receive the Zoom link and call-in information.
