5th annual Ben Lauren memorial livestock show concludes in Chatham

By Andi Anderson

The 5th annual Ben Lauren Memorial Livestock Show wrapped up in Chatham on Sunday. This two-day event, named in honor of a beloved Forsyth Township firefighter who passed away in 2020, brought together 4-H kids from across Michigan to showcase their hogs, lambs, and cattle.

Event volunteer Ansel Frost highlighted the educational aspect of the show, saying it also taught kids about Ben Lauren and his legacy. “They are practicing showmanship. Showing their animals, hogs, lambs, steers, goats,” Frost said. “And then also market class, so they get to have the judge evaluate their animal, tell them things they might be able to change before the fair, and go from there.”

Throughout the weekend, participants, ages 9 to 19, had the opportunity to engage in showmanship and market classes, where they received feedback from judges to improve their skills for future fairs.

Frost emphasized the value of this experience, noting it was a fun and educational event for all involved.

The livestock show not only provided a platform for young farmers to demonstrate their hard work and dedication but also served as a community gathering to remember and honor Ben Lauren.

His contributions as a firefighter and community member were celebrated through this meaningful event, fostering a sense of unity and remembrance.

The event concluded with positive feedback from participants and attendees, who appreciated the opportunity to learn, compete, and connect with others who share their passion for livestock and agriculture.

As the 5th annual show came to a close, plans for next year’s event are already underway, promising another chance to honor Ben Lauren’s memory and support the next generation of farmers.

Frost summarized the event's impact, saying, “It’s about more than just showing animals. It’s about community, learning, and keeping Ben’s spirit alive through something he loved.” The Ben Lauren Memorial Livestock Show continues to be a cherished tradition, inspiring young farmers and bringing the community together in celebration and education.
