Donald Beitz Honored with 2025 CANR Outstanding Alumni Award

Dr. Donald Beitz, a renowned professor from Iowa State University (ISU), has been named the recipient of the 2025 CANR Outstanding Alumni Award by Michigan State University (MSU). This prestigious award recognizes alumni who have achieved the highest professional success while maintaining integrity and dedication to their field.

Beitz earned his Ph.D. in Dairy Nutrition & Biochemistry from MSU in 1967. Since joining ISU in 1967, he has had a remarkable career spanning over five decades, making groundbreaking contributions to animal science, biochemistry, and lipid metabolism.

His research has focused on dairy cow health, cholesterol homeostasis, oxidative stress, and fat deposition.

A globally recognized scientist, Beitz has published about 300 peer-reviewed manuscripts, 350 abstracts, and nine patents. He has been an influential teacher, mentoring over 100 graduate students and teaching 15,874 students in biochemistry, nutrition, and agricultural biotechnology.

His passion for education and research has shaped the careers of many leaders in academia, industry, and government.

Beitz has been active in professional organizations, including the American Dairy Science Association, American Society of Animal Science, and American Society for Nutrition. He has also served on editorial boards, grant review committees, and USDA panels.

His numerous awards and recognitions include Fellowships in three major scientific societies and National Associate Membership in the National Academy of Sciences. His dedication to research, teaching, and mentorship has earned him this well-deserved recognition as an outstanding alumnus.
