Farm Dog Skippy inspires hope for disabled farmers

Farm Dog Skippy inspires hope for disabled farmers

By Jamie Martin

The journey of Skippy, the 2024 Farm Bureau Farm Dog of the Year, and her owners, Donald and Laura Adams, encapsulates more than just an award; it symbolizes hope and practical support for disabled farmers across the nation.

After Donald sustained a life-altering injury on their farm, the couple discovered the transformative role working dogs could play through programs like AgrAbility and P.H.A.R.M. Dog USA.

Skippy arrived at the Adams' farm in 2022, specifically trained to assist with farm operations despite Donald's limited mobility. Her tasks range from managing livestock to retrieving tools and even summoning help, making daily farm operations feasible and safer for Donald. Her impact was so profound that it prompted their entry into the Farm Dog of the Year contest, which Skippy won in 2024.

The recognition brought unforeseen opportunities to shine a light on organizations like P.H.A.R.M. Dog USA, which train dogs to aid farmers with disabilities.

Motivated by Skippy’s success and the practical benefits she brings, Laura is now dedicated to promoting the value of farm dogs through various platforms, from media interviews to speaking engagements. Her ultimate aim is to enhance support for disabled farmers, inspire community contributions to relevant organizations, and educate the public on the versatile roles of farm dogs beyond just herding.

This campaign not only celebrates Skippy’s achievements but also underscores the broader implications of integrating specially trained dogs into farming operations, offering a new lease on life for those facing similar challenges as the Adams family.
