Groundwater Use Raises Concerns for California Farms

A recent scientific study has revealed that groundwater pumping for agricultural irrigation may have greater environmental impacts than previously understood.

Researchers from Simon Fraser University, the University of California, Berkeley, and the United States Department of Agriculture investigated how groundwater withdrawals influence streamflow in California's Emerald Triangle region.

The study focused on headwater watersheds, where streams begin and provide important water supplies to downstream rivers. These waterways also play a critical role in supporting fish populations and maintaining healthy ecosystems.

"People often think of groundwater or aquifers as a separate resource from streams. But in many landscapes, they're connected parts of the same system," said Jesse Hahm, assistant professor of geography and co-author of the study.

To better understand the issue, scientists used a new modeling system and analyzed 580 possible scenarios. Their goal was to measure how groundwater pumping and changing environmental conditions interact to influence streamflow.

Results showed that irrigation-related groundwater use can significantly reduce streamflow during the summer growing season. In some cases, seasonal streams stopped flowing as much as five weeks earlier than expected.

Researchers also discovered that streams that normally run year-round could dry up entirely under certain conditions. The greatest impacts occurred during dry years when groundwater reserves were already limited.

Another important finding was that measurable streamflow reductions can occur even when agricultural activity covers only a small portion of a watershed. This suggests that the location and timing of groundwater extraction can be just as important as the total volume of water used.

The study also highlighted the effects of climate change on water availability. Historically, snowpack acted as a natural reservoir, slowly releasing water into groundwater systems. Warmer winters and declining snow levels are changing that process and increasing dependence on groundwater supplies.

Researchers believe these findings can help support better water management strategies. As farmers and communities adapt to drier conditions, understanding groundwater-stream connections will be essential for balancing agricultural needs with environmental stewardship.
