Herbicide Strategy Meetings for Soybean Growers

Several global factors are responsible for reducing the availability of many commonly applied herbicides in 2022. This is a critical issue as effective weed control is essential to profitable crop production. The Michigan Soybean Committee is leading a cooperative effort to conduct three regional meetings in February to inform crop producers about the herbicide shortages and provide strategies for managing weeds in 2022. Each meeting will begin with breakfast at 8 a.m. and run until 11 a.m. The dates and locations of the meetings are listed below:

Feb. 2, The Pinnacle Center, 3330 Highland Dr., Hudsonville. Register at https://bit.ly/3ITWcKH

Feb. 3, Ingham County Fairgrounds, 700 E Ash St., Mason. Register at https://bit.ly/3obBRIL

Feb. 9, MSU Saginaw Valley Research & Extension Center, 3775 S Reese Rd., Frankenmuth. Register at https://bit.ly/3rfG0NT

Representatives from BASF, Syngenta, Bayer and Corteva will discuss the causes of the herbicide shortages and provide an outlook for availability in 2022. Nutrien Ag Solutions staff will provide tips for farmers to communicate with their crop input retailer. Christy Sprague, Michigan State University Extension weed management specialist, will provide specific recommendations for managing weeds in soybeans given the projected herbicide shortages. The program will wrap up with a speaker panel to answer farmer questions. This program has been approved for two pesticide applicator recertification credits.

There is no registration fee for these programs. However, pre-registration is required to ensure an accurate count for breakfast. To register online, please visit the links listed for each of the locations or call the Michigan Soybean Committee office at 989-652-3294. If registering by phone, please provide your name, meeting location, phone number and the number of people attending. The registration deadline for each program is noon the day before the program, however earlier registrations will be greatly appreciated.

Program sponsors include the Michigan Soybean Committee, MSU Extension, BASF, Corteva, Helena, Wilbur-Ellis, Bayer CropScience, Nutrien Ag Solutions and Syngenta.
