The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) is encouraging Michiganders to prioritize food safety as part of their New Year’s resolutions for 2025. Proper food handling practices help prevent foodborne illnesses, keeping families healthy.
Why Food Safety Matters
MDARD Director Tim Boring highlights the importance of food safety in promoting health: "Improving food safety practices is a great way to kick off a happy, healthy 2025 for you and your loved ones."
Five Food Safety Practices
Wash Your Hands Regularly
Handwashing with soap and water before and after handling food is essential, especially when dealing with raw meat, poultry, and seafood.
Avoid Cross-Contamination
Keep raw meats separate from ready-to-eat foods. Use different cutting boards for raw proteins and fresh produce, and clean utensils and surfaces thoroughly after use.
Use a Food Thermometer
Ensure foods are cooked to safe internal temperatures. For instance, poultry should reach 165°F, and ground beef should reach 160°F to avoid harmful bacteria.
Refrigerate Promptly
Store perishable foods in the refrigerator within two hours of preparation. Ensure your refrigerator is set to 40°F or below for optimal food safety.
Teach Food Safety
Share these food safety tips with family and friends. Educating others promotes better habits and a collective effort to prevent foodborne illnesses.
A Healthy Start to 2025
By following these simple practices, Michiganders can ensure safer food handling at home, contributing to a healthier lifestyle. Food safety is a shared responsibility, and starting 2025 with these habits can make a lasting impact.
