In a promising start to the year, the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development shares uplifting news about the success of two esteemed cheesemakers, Leelanau Cheese Co. and Idyll Farms, at the 2023 World Cheese Awards in Trondheim, Norway. This globally recognized competition, hosted by the Guild of Fine Food, stands as the largest cheese-only contest worldwide.
Leelanau Cheese Co., nestled in Suttons Bay, achieved the highest distinction, a Super Gold, for its exquisite Leelanau Raclette. Additionally, the company secured a Gold award for its Leelanau Reserve. Among 4,202 entries, only 100 received the prestigious Super Gold, making Leelanau Cheese Co. a standout among global cheesemakers. Managing partner Gary Smith attributes their success to access to top-quality milk from partners like Brinks Creamery, DeVor Dairy Farm and Creamery, and Norwood Centennial Farms.
Idyll Farms of Northport garnered attention in Norway, clinching silver awards for three hand-crafted goat cheeses and a bronze award for Idyll Pastures with Garlic and Herb. Owner Amy Spitznagel expresses delight at the international recognition and underscores their commitment to producing healthy and delectable G.O.A.T. cheese through regenerative farming practices.
These victories underscore Michigan's prominence in the global cheese arena. The World Cheese Awards provide a platform for artisan cheesemakers to showcase their unique styles and flavors, earning well-deserved international acclaim.
