Michigan Funds Four Climate Resiliency Projects for Agriculture

By Andi Anderson

The Agricultural Climate Resiliency Program has awarded $5.1 million to fund four new projects aimed at addressing climate-related challenges in Michigan’s agriculture sector.

This initiative, a collaboration between Michigan State University (MSU), the Michigan Plant Coalition, and the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD), supports research that enhances water conservation, soil health, and sustainable farming practices.

Each project will receive $1.275 million over three years, focusing on improving agricultural resilience through innovative strategies. The selected projects include:

  • Climate-Resilient Cropping Systems: Researchers are developing a data-driven modeling platform to help farmers make informed decisions about managing severe weather, pests, and diseases. The goal is to improve economic and environmental outcomes for Michigan farmers.
  • AI-Based Forecasting for Crops: Scientists are building an artificial intelligence tool to predict outcomes for corn, potatoes, soybeans, and wheat in southern Michigan. This platform will assist farmers in planning for climate variability and increasing productivity.
  • Preventing Nutrient Runoff: A project working with corn and soybean farmers aims to reduce nutrient loss, improve water quality, and enhance soil carbon sequestration. Researchers will demonstrate conservation practices and develop decision-support tools for farmers.
  • Regenerative Agriculture for Water Conservation: Using climate models, researchers will study how regenerative farming improves soil health, increases water retention, and reduces runoff. The goal is to develop strategies for sustainable water use in agriculture.

These projects combine research and outreach to ensure that Michigan farmers receive practical solutions. MSU Extension Director Quentin Tyler emphasized that strong partnerships with growers are key to implementing effective, research-based agricultural practices.
