Michigan maple syrup production declines in 2024

Michigan's maple syrup production for the 2024 season was estimated at 200,000 gallons, according to Marlo D. Johnson, Director of the USDA NASS, Great Lakes Regional Office. This marks a decline of 5,000 gallons compared to the previous year, placing Michigan fifth in the nation's maple syrup production rankings for 2024. The state had 650,000 taps in use, resulting in an average yield of 0.308 gallons per tap.

In 2023, the average price of Michigan maple syrup was $42.80 per gallon, an increase of $5.70 from the previous year. This boosted the total value of Michigan's maple syrup production to $8.77 million, reflecting a 10 percent rise from 2022.

Nationally, the 2024 maple syrup production in the United States reached 5.86 million gallons, a 17 percent increase from the previous season for comparable states.

The total number of taps across the country rose to 17.1 million, up 5 percent from the 2023 total for comparable states. The yield per tap nationally improved to 0.342 gallons, an increase of 0.035 gallons from the prior season.

Despite these gains, the average price per gallon in the United States decreased to $32.80 in 2023, down $1.70 from 2022. Consequently, the overall value of U.S. maple syrup production for 2023 was $159 million, a 23 percent decline from the previous year.
