Michigan Promotes Grain Safety Awareness During Stand Up for Grain Safety Week

By Andi Anderson

The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) is partnering with the Michigan Agri-Business Association (MABA) and the National Grain and Feed Association (NGFA) to promote grain safety during Stand Up for Grain Safety Week from March 24-28, 2025. The initiative aims to prevent injuries and fatalities in grain handling facilities across the state.

Grain entrapment is a major risk in the industry, with 42 cases reported in 2023, nearly half of them fatal. Other hazards include falls, equipment-related injuries, and combustible dust explosions.

Safety leaders emphasize proper lockout/tagout procedures, confined space protocols, and personal protective equipment (PPE) to minimize risks.

“Safety should always be the top priority in grain handling facilities,” said NGFA Senior Vice President Jess McCluer. The campaign encourages businesses to review safety plans, conduct training sessions, and engage workers in discussions on best practices.

The National Grain and Feed Association, along with OSHA, provides educational resources, including training modules and emergency preparedness guides, available at www.standup4grainsafety.org. The MIOSHA website also offers additional workplace safety materials.

MDARD inspectors will distribute challenge coins throughout the year to recognize outstanding safety efforts in Michigan’s grain industry. Sponsored by MABA, these coins serve as a reminder that “We All Have a Piece in This.”

Michigan businesses are encouraged to participate by hosting safety meetings and reviewing emergency response plans. By prioritizing workplace safety, the agricultural industry can reduce risks and ensure a safer environment for workers handling grain.
