Microsoft and the National FFA Organization have announced an expansion of the FarmBeats for Students program, designed to bring precision agriculture education into classrooms nationwide.
This program provides FFA teachers and students in 185 middle and high schools across the U.S. with free FarmBeats kits. These kits include ready-to-use smart sensor systems and an easy-to-follow curriculum that requires no prior technical experience, making it accessible for diverse classroom settings.
FarmBeats for Students allows students to build environmental sensor networks and apply artificial intelligence (AI) to monitor soil moisture and detect nutrient deficiencies in plants. This hands-on approach teaches students how to make data-driven decisions in real time to optimize crop health.
Students can customize the kits to address local agricultural challenges such as drought, frost, or pest issues, gaining practical skills relevant to their communities.
Microsoft highlights that the adoption of advanced farming technologies — such as automated tractors, drones, and data analytics — is growing. Equipping students with skills in machine automation, data science, and AI will prepare them to remain competitive in the evolving global agriculture market.
The FarmBeats for Students program was co-developed by Microsoft, FFA, and agricultural educators. It aligns with several educational standards, including AI for K-12 guidelines, Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources career standards, Computer Science Teachers Association standards, and Common Core math standards.
Teachers and students interested in FarmBeats can purchase kits for $35 and access free training on Microsoft Learn. Educators can also enroll in a free course on the Microsoft Educator Learn Center that covers precision agriculture, data science, and AI, offering professional development hours and badges.
Christine White, chief program officer for the National FFA Organization, emphasized the importance of agricultural education and leadership development.
Programs like FarmBeats equip students with the confidence, technical knowledge, and adaptability needed to succeed in agriculture and other evolving industries. Such investments in youth foster a sustainable and innovative future for agriculture.
