MSU Extension Meeting for Producers on January 27

By Andi Anderson

Michigan State University Extension (MSU Extension) invites vegetable, field crop, and flower producers to an update meeting on Monday, January 27, 2025, at the Rawson Memorial Library in Cass City, Michigan. This free event runs from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and includes a light lunch.

The session will cover critical topics aimed at supporting producers in improving their operations:

  • Greenhouse Water Management: Caitlin Splawski will discuss adjusting irrigation water pH and safely handling compounds, especially for growers dealing with highly alkaline water sources.
  • Pesticide Use and Regulations: Teresa Crook will introduce Bulletins Live! Two, a U.S. EPA tool for managing pesticide use to protect endangered species.
  • Farm Recordkeeping: Cheri Burk will highlight the value of proper recordkeeping and demonstrate how to use collected data for informed decision-making.
  • Herbicide and Soil Health: Jenna Falor will address herbicide carryover risks and the benefits of soil-building cover crops, emphasizing how to avoid complications.
  • Vegetable Crop Review: Salta Mambetova will present a 2024 season-in-review for vegetable growers, detailing pests, diseases, and integrated pest management strategies.

Attendees can earn four restricted-use pesticide credits through the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, applicable across several categories.

The meeting is limited to 50 participants. To register or ask questions, contact Salta Mambetova at mambetov@msu.edu or 517-230-1427, or Teresa Crook at crookter@msu.edu or 989-652-3552.

This event is an excellent opportunity for producers to stay informed, improve their practices, and earn professional credits while networking with industry experts.
