The Michigan State University (MSU) College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (CANR) has named Natali Gonzalez the recipient of the 2024 Outstanding Student Leadership Award. This award recognizes students who demonstrate service, leadership, and commitment to their department, college, and community.
A Journey of Leadership and Resilience
Gonzalez, a first-generation student and migrant farmworker, pursued a degree in Environmental Studies and Sustainability. Through the College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP) Scholars Initiative, she received academic and financial support, which she credits as essential to her success at MSU.
At the CANR Spring Commencement Ceremony, Gonzalez reflected on the shared challenges of her graduating class, encouraging her peers to embrace their future opportunities with confidence.
Commitment to Agriculture and Sustainability
Gonzalez served as President of the Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Related Sciences (MANRRS) MSU chapter, advocating for underrepresented voices in agriculture. She also participated in international engagement programs, leading sustainable agricultural projects in Chiapas, Mexico.
Her passion for environmental sustainability and responsible farming stems from her personal experience as a migrant farmworker, which gives her a unique perspective on agricultural challenges.
Pursuing Higher Education and Future Goals
Gonzalez is now pursuing a doctoral degree in Crop and Soil Science at the Kellogg Biological Station under Dr. Christine Sprunger. Her research, supported by MSU fellowships, focuses on enhancing soil health and sustainable farming practices.
Looking ahead, she aspires to work in crop consulting or agricultural extension, aiming to help farmers adopt sustainable practices and advocate for marginalized agricultural communities.
