Jason Rowntree, the C.S. Mott Professor of Sustainable Agriculture in the Michigan State University Department of Animal Science, has been recognized for his outstanding contributions to sustainable agriculture and agricultural research. He recently received the Hero Recognition Award from the North Central Region Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (NCR-SARE) program.
The award honors individuals who have demonstrated long-term service, leadership, and a lasting impact on sustainable agriculture throughout the North Central United States and beyond. Rowntree received the recognition during the NCR-SARE Administrative Council summer meeting held in Madison, Wisconsin.
NCR-SARE is one of four regional offices that operate the national Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education program. The initiative supports innovation, education, and research projects that help strengthen sustainable agricultural practices across the United States. The North Central Region includes 12 states: Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.
Rowntree is widely recognized for his work in beef cattle production and regenerative grazing systems. His research focuses on helping producers improve profitability while adopting farming practices that support environmental health and long-term sustainability. Regenerative grazing systems are designed to improve soil quality, enhance ecosystem resilience, and promote efficient livestock production.
Over the years, Rowntree has worked closely with farmers, ranchers, researchers, and agricultural organizations to develop practical solutions that can be applied directly on farms. His efforts have helped producers better understand how sustainable management practices can improve both economic and environmental outcomes.
Speaking about the honor, Rowntree emphasized the importance of collaboration within the agricultural community.
“I’m very appreciative to NCR-SARE for this recognition, and I want to acknowledge that there are so many people involved in making our program thrive,” Rowntree said.
He also highlighted the importance of providing valuable information to agricultural producers.
“Our goal is to deliver information to farmers and ranchers that helps them make informed decisions. It’s important for our producers to have profitable operations, but they also embrace the idea of building resilience and ensuring our food systems are sustainable long term. The boots-on-the-ground partnerships are really what makes this work.”
The recognition reflects the growing importance of research that balances farm profitability with environmental stewardship. Through his work, Rowntree has contributed to advancing sustainable livestock systems and promoting agricultural practices that benefit producers, communities, and natural resources.
The award also highlights the role of research, education, and farmer partnerships in building resilient food systems. As agriculture continues to face economic and environmental challenges, efforts like Rowntree’s provide valuable guidance for creating a more sustainable future for the farming industry.
