Protect Your Credit - MDARD's Labor Day Warning

The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) is reminding drivers, consumers, and visitors to remain vigilant against credit card skimming as Labor Day approaches. Credit card skimmers are devices placed inside gas pumps that steal credit and debit card information without being visible from the outside.

MDARD Director Tim Boring emphasized their commitment to keeping Michiganders protected during the holiday weekend. MDARD inspectors play a crucial role in safeguarding motorists and truckers from credit card skimming by conducting routine pump inspections to identify any potential skimmers. Additionally, inspectors ensure the quality and quantity of gas at the pumps, assuring consumers that they receive the fuel they paid for.

While most gas station operators maintain the proper fuel quality and quantity, motorists can enhance their security by taking a few precautions. Before starting the pump, they should verify that the price display on the pump is set to zero and matches the price on the roadside sign. Also, consumers are encouraged to request a receipt as a record of their purchase.

Craig VanBuren, MDARD’s Lab Division Director, mentioned that Michigan has a high compliance rate of over 90% regarding fuel pumps, largely due to the efforts of their weights and measures staff. The few non-compliant cases may arise due to reasons such as display malfunctions or excessive fuel delivery. MDARD works closely with station owners and operators to rectify non-compliance issues and bring them back into compliance.

MDARD collaborates with the U.S. Secret Service, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and local law enforcement as the lead agencies in investigating credit card skimming cases. The department remains committed to seeking out skimmers during routine pump inspections and actively participating in efforts to track down thieves involved in credit card skimming incidents.

To report suspected poor fuel quality or pump shortages, individuals can contact the Motor Fuels Hot Line at 800-MDA-FUEL or 800-632-3835. This hotline number is posted on pumps at filling stations across the state.
